Brobdingnagian

Howard495 is pleased to present Brobdingnagian, a solo exhibition of new photo collages by Toronto based artist Aaron Jones. Made by culling fragments from magazines, advertisements, newspapers, books and personal photos, this body of work is inspired by an exploration of his native Southern Ontario landscape. Jones largely uses collage in his practice as an instrument of self-exploration, to investigate societal constructs and to expose the method by which conflicting realties are forged.

By using collage in this way Jones explores and critiques cultural stereotypes, recontextualizing the images into something new and imagined. Inspired by a series of expeditions through familiar forests and rural landscapes, Jones has juxtaposed intimate, heavily layered collages with large format, photographed collage works.

Brobdingnagian, the exhibition’s title, is borrowed from Jonathan Swift’s novel Gulliver’s Travels, where Brobdingnag is a fictional land inhabited by giants. Brobdingnagian has today come to describe anything of colossal size. Enter Canada’s vast, monumental landscape, fused with the pressing need to tear down and expose cultural stereotypes and unveil the danger within the insididious nature of what is unseen.

I will present new work that situates collaged characters and figures that represent the self in environments I grew up around and yearn to know more of…. A series of expeditions through familiar forests is acting as a starting point to expand my botanical knowledge. New collage and photo based work will act as a response to current and upcoming expeditions in the forests, which will house space for study of the land I live near and reflections on the person I am in relation to that land. I think paintings are, simply, the epitome of “art”. Maybe it’s because I’ve been somewhat indoctrinated to believe that…But I can’t get over using only colours that an artist mixed themselves to create a world seemingly all from scratch.

Currently, I’m not actively using any images of or from paintings in my work. What I’ve been shifting toward is using only specific clipppings of just a colour from other artworks, if any. I think it’s important for my collage practice to primarily use photographic images. Aaron Jones

I try to balance my own aesthetic values with my philosophical ones. As I work continuously to build and deconstruct my work for aesthetics, slowly a story, character or place starts to come together in my mind: something that I can speak to….it is really important to me to have a balance betwen aesthetic values and the richness in the story.
